Restarting

·2 mins

I’ve decided to resurrect this effort to write on a regular basis. I originally started this project to document my learnings as I was building a team and company, and while I had a few weeks of consistent writing, all other work eventually took precedence. I’d start every Saturday with the desire to write something and share with an audience, but by the time we got my daughter down to her first nap and had cleared the kitchen, a thousand other priorities crept up.

I’m giving this another shot for primarily two reasons: 1) I believe that writing is thinking, and writing helps clarify ideas that are circling around in my head, and I want to improve this critical skill. 2) Others will benefit from what I’ve learned.

From my research, it seems that prolific writers have a system that they follow.

  1. Much like exercise - this needs to become a habit. I need to try writing every day, even if it’s just for 15-30 minutes.

  2. I shouldn’t be starting on Saturday. I need to have an idea fleshed out by mid-week, so that I’m doing last minute revisions and edits on the weekend. I also need to have a deadline for when I hit the publish button.

  3. Even if I don’t have a fully fleshed out topic, I should still ensure that I’m writing something - maybe something that I heard on a recent podcast.

4) Creating a backlog of ideas is essential. I should keep a running list of topics, interesting quotes, or observations that could become future posts. This prevents the blank page syndrome that often derails writing habits.
  1. The goal isn’t perfection, but consistency. Published work that might be “good enough” is infinitely more valuable than the perfect post that never sees the light of day.

By committing to this system, I hope to build a body of work that not only improves my thinking but also provides value to others on similar journeys.

I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from data, product and growth leaders at companies such as InVision, CB Insights, Breather, Karbon, FreshBooks, Wealthsimple, among others. I love getting my hands dirty in helping build infrastructure to power insights and growth. I’ve helped build data teams from scratch, and I’m learning how to a better manager every day.
